LUPUS: LEARN MORE, MEET ANRF RESEARCHERS

An estimated 1.5 million Americans have lupus and live with the chronic disease that has no known cure, affects many parts of the body and can be life-threatening. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is the most common form of lupus, and the one most referred to when the disease is discussed.

In the current 2021-22 cohort of grant funded researchers, Sarah Baxter, M.D., Ph.D. and Maria Gutierrez-Arcelus, Ph.D. focus their research on lupus and specifically on SLE. To see both present and discuss their research, along with alumni scholars Jason Knight, M.D., Ph.D. from University of Michigan, Timothy B. Niewold, M.D., Mayo Clinic and Jolien Suurmond, Ph.D. from The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, watch the Research Spotlight Series webinar on Lupus from Fall 2021.

GIVING

GROWTH, EFFICIENCY & FOUR-STAR DESIGNATION

While the Arthritis National Research Foundation is a national nonprofit awarding $100,000 grants, it wasn’t always that way. More than 50 years ago it started as a local organization, becoming a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1973 and awarding its first grant to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, Ca.— to purchase an electron microscope. Grants were awarded within the state of California until 1996 when the grants began being awarded to scientists throughout the U.S. To date, nearly 190 researchers have received approximately $22M in ANRF funding at nearly 90 institutions and universities.

Its impact has only grown because of donor support, corporate or other foundation funding, all because of trust and belief in the work and impact of the organization. As evaluated by the nonprofit sector’s premier trust indicator platform and organization, Charity Navigator, ANRF continues to receive a 4-star rating year after year, which is the highest rating available. For complete information of the rating, the score and Charity Navigator’s “give with confidence” designation for ANRF, the Star Rated Report is available for review.
